Post Ride to Spokane, WA?
Hey everyone, well I have departed on my somewhat annual work ride, this year I'm headed to Spokane, WA via Fresno, Portland and Seattle. I left Carlsbad this morning and rode to Fresno for a meeting, I made it to Fresno by 1:30 for my 2:00pm meeting.

Leaving Carlsbad, I just took the 5 to the 405 then back to the 5 to the 99 to Fresno. The 405 was stacked up with what I though was just morning rush hour traffic, but after splitting lanes (with the panniers on!!) for about an hour I came upon a flat bed tow truck dragging the remains of a black Honda sportbike across the ground and up on to the back with a winch, this was disturbing to see, I hope that the rider faired better than the bike. I said a prayer while driving by and was happy to see the open road ahead as it was getting HOT.

Along the 99 there were a few grass fires to make things interesting, but otherwise uneventful.

Not too many photo ops on this day...

Long day tomorrow, I have a meeting in Madera, CA in the morning, then off to Portland, OR; should be about 11 hours on the bike, more if I stop for photos...

405 Fwy......sounds like LOTS O FUN

Did you notice how narrow the lanes are compared to SD freeways? Splitting lanes in LA sucks.

Yes, the 405 lane split is a treacherous one; especially with the bags on it is ridiculous!!

Yep, the gear is always good to go at the meetings, being the owners rep has some perks...

Well I made it to Portland!! It sure was a long ride though...

I left Fresno at 7:30 for my Madera meeting and I was done with everything by 9:00 so I hit the road for Portland. A whopping 15 minutes into the ride up the 99 I'm getting pulled over by a CHP. I was doing 80 in a 65 basically keeping up with the flow of traffic, but the honest (yep I was doing 80 and yep I knew the limit was either 65 or 70) approach got me nothin but a ticket, oh well I'll either call Mr. Ticket or go to traffic school. After the CHP incident I was pretty cautious with the speed, and it was a good thing since they were all over the place from Sacramento to the Oregon border.

I had forgotten how nice of a ride the 5 is from Redding into Southern Oregon lots of high speed twists and turns, (as long as the random trucker doesn't decide to pass his buddy who is going 65 while he is going 66...this behavior pissed me off more than the ticket). As beautiful and twisty as Oregon was it was even better that I only saw a few State Troopers and they were busy cleaning up a wreck on the south bound side.

I rolled into the hotel in Portland at 9:00 pm a whopping 12 hours on the bike with random gas stops and a sit down lunch.

A few observations:

1. Man the ST3 is one fantastic bike!!
2. Lake Shasta is frighteningly low.
3. Oregon sure is pretty when its not raining.
4. There must be more Subaru's in the state of Oregon than anywhere else.
5. The people of Oregon are very nice for the most part.

Tony,

Glad to have met you last Wed. so I can put a face to the story. We lived in OR for four years and there is some beutiful riding up there as I'm sure WA has. Mount Hood would be nice to see if you have never seen it. You can go up the Columbia Gourge and loop around.

Rich

Yeah Spokane, WA!!

I had a meeting in Vancouver, WA this morning, then headed over to Spokane. I rode along the Columbia River Gourge in Oregon east to the 82 then north on the 395 / 90. Overall it was a great ride, the scenery along the Gourge is amazing, no low water levels here. It took about 5 hours to get from Vancouver to Spokane, thankfully no tickets today. I did see a few hitchhikers on the freeway though, that kind of caught me by surprise; it seems the unwashed without transportation are all headed to Salt Lake City, I'm not sure why they would want to leave Oregon, it's Hippie friendly...

Here are a few photos:

Tomorrow I have a meeting in the morning in Moses Lake, WA, then I will be high-tailing it south to see just how far I can get to make Friday's ride home as easy as possible. I would like to get to Reno, but my Butt may have other plans...

Well, I decided to avoid the desert so after my meeting in Moses Lake, WA I headed back south on the 17 to the 395, then west along the Gourge on 84 then I took US-97 South through central Oregon and into CA. The 97 was a great ride, lots of small towns along the way tree lined, and not very crowded. I made it all the way to Redding today, so I should be home for dinner tomorrow night...

I hope to get on the road early tomorrow to avoid the heat and LA traffic.

Here are some photos from today:
